CHAPTER 17
ASH
I was one last gas station away from arriving home. After filling my car up, I parked near the grass and let Sasha out for a final walk before I had to take her back to the shelter. I couldn’t begin to consider taking her with me to the condo. The landlord was about as miserly as it got about pets, and okay, fine, it was their property and their rules. I just wished I could sneak her in for at least one night before I had to part with her.
Sasha, while still a bit misbehaved, was starting to get a hang of my ‘tsk’ of disapproval every time she got out of line. When she pulled too hard against her leash, a ‘tsk’ would remind her to give me some slack, at least for a minute. Her yipping could also be momentarily stopped, so if I had more time I possibly could have trained all the bad habits out of her.
But this would have to do. She was still a good dog, and I could see her being adopted in less than a week with the cute little personality she had. All she needed was a family who matched her energy level and who didn’t mind her need for attention.
Once Sasha was finished, I set her back inside the car and got ready for the drive to the shelter.
It was bizarre seeing the town I knew so well be in such shambles. Some areas were hit harder than others, but it made me worry about the state of the shelter. It would be just their luck to have been hit.
As I headed down the road toward the shelter, all my hope for its well-being slipped away. When I pulled into the parking lot, I found the building in a wretched state. Thank goodness all the animals had been taken in, because I didn’t think anything could have survived what happened to the building.
I parked and stepped out with Sasha in my arms. One other car was in the parking lot, so I figured some member of the staff had to be here.
I walked into the lobby—or what used to be the lobby. The windows had been shattered, and it looked like a flood had swept through the place. The cages, files, and front desk computers were all trashed and on the floor.
One of the men who took care of cleaning the facility stepped into the lobby from the kennel hall. “Ah,” he said, not looking too happy to see Sasha. “I hope you can hold onto her for the next month at least, because it’ll be a while before we can take any animals back in.”
“That’s awful. Did anybody get hurt?”
“No, the shelter was empty, thankfully.”
I looked around at the damage. “I sure hope insurance will cover all this.”
“To a degree. But we’re still screwed since most contractors are booked. It’s going to be a while before this place gets fixed up.”
“No exceptions for an animal shelter? Nobody can move this place up the list?”
The man shrugged in defeat.
